Thomas Samuel’s sound was once described as “charming loopy art-pop” by NME in 2010. Back then Thomas was the singer-songwriting half of the psych-folk duo, Tallest Trees. The band’s debut album, “The Ostrich or the Lark,” drew comparisons to avant-pop powerhouses like Animal Collective and Caribou. The Trees shared the stage with hipster favorites like Yeasayer, Toro Y Moi, and Washed Out. Then they broke up.
Thomas got married, had a kid, went back to school, and got a real job working as a museum educator. Nowadays most of his musical talents are applied to the history podcast he records, edits, and hosts: Polk’s America. Occasionally Thomas dusts himself off and sings songs for people. And though he may not sound as “loopy” or like “art-pop” as he once did, his songs still have charm.
Look for new music in 2020.
